Coat Genetics: What It Means at the Grooming Table

A client books a “doodle groom” and sends a photograph of the finish they want. You have groomed plenty of dogs with the same cross, but this coat feels different: a dense, springy shoulder, a softer chest and furnishings that collapse as soon as you put the comb down. The breed description has told you less than the first minute of handling the coat.
Coat genetics helps explain why. It also gives us a useful boundary: knowing where a coat comes from does not tell us exactly how to groom the dog standing in front of us.
Three familiar features have different genetic influences
Research by Cadieu and colleagues identified variants in FGF5, RSPO2 and KRT71 associated with much of the variation in length, furnishings and curl in the purebred dogs studied. Furnishings means the characteristic longer growth around areas such as the muzzle and eyebrows. These features interact; “long”, “curly” and “furnished” are not interchangeable descriptions. The NHGRI Dog Genome Project describes coat appearance as a combination of genetic influences rather than a single breed switch. That supports a more precise consultation, but it does not turn a photograph or a breed label into a complete prediction of the coat's working behaviour. See the NHGRI explanation.
Describe the coat in terms you can act on
For salon purposes, replace one broad label with a short working description. You do not need to identify a genotype, and you should not present your observations as a genetic assessment.

Keep those observations separate. “Very curly” does not answer “prepared to the skin”, and a coat that lifts beautifully under the comb has not necessarily passed a tangle check. A useful note might read: “Shoulder holds its shape after lifting; chest falls flatter; recurrent friction tangles behind the harness.” That gives the next groomer a place to start.
Use a local test, then reassess the whole outline
Once the coat is clean, thoroughly dry and suitably prepared, choose a small, inconspicuous body area for the planned finish. Begin conservatively. Record the actual blade or guard, the base blade where relevant, and the direction of travel. Let the coat settle before judging it.
If the test looks too close, do not repeat it over the whole body to “see how it comes together”. Revisit the plan while you still have length to work with. If it looks satisfactory, check another area with noticeably different coat behaviour before assuming the same approach will give the same visual result there.
This is a practical comparison, not a laboratory measurement. The dog changes stance, the coat has natural variation and your viewing angle matters. Its value comes from making the decision deliberate and leaving a record that can be used next time.
Choose complementary tools, rather than another version of the same job
A coarse-and-fine finishing comb gives you two spacing options for checking small prepared sections. Use the coarser area to assess access, then the finer area where it moves comfortably. Resistance calls for a smaller section or a pause, not more force.

Explain the decision without giving the client a genetics lecture
Try: “The photograph gives us a good direction. Your dog's chest coat falls more softly, so I'll adapt that area rather than promise the exact same shape everywhere. Let's also choose a length you can keep comfortable between appointments.”
That is a stronger promise than a breed-based formula. It shows the client that you have looked closely, explains the difference they may see and connects the haircut to the care they can maintain.
